Renault 5 Restoration Project

Mar'04. I apologize for not updating my site for the last few months... I was too busy with my house, so I haven't made any progress with R5 and therefore there are no news yet for updating the site.

Jul'03. My job keeps me very busy, sorry for not updating the site... So far I've passed technical control and got the car registered. So finally it's up and running "officially" though still a lot of work to be done (painting at least).

12-May-03. I haven't registered the car so far neither was driving it on a regular basis. As more than a year passed since I've bought it, I decided to register it and start using it. I'll continue the work on the car but it's more decorative so it will not stop me from using the car.

I failed to pass technical control because one of the head lights was damaged by water. Bought a replacement head light for 25 Eur.

Mar'03. Mounted the seats

Sorry for delaying the new photos, but I just don't have time! Coming soon!

Feb'03. I have finally finished the work with the passenger door:
  • Mounted the loud speaker
  • Decorated the panel with leather imitation and carpet
  • Mounted tha panel on the door
The photos coming soon!

 Jan'03. No further progress. Too cold weather plus many other priorities. I plan to mount the seats as soon as the weather will be warm enough.

01-01-03. Happy New Year!

Dec'02. I did not spend any time with my R5
  • I needed to do some repair of my Citroen
  • And then I went for vacations... Christmas, New Year - time for fun, not for work :)

Nov'02. Customised radiator grill

I am unhappy with the standard radiator grill, so I've decided to customise it
  • Sanded the grill, then covered with PU-foam (pressing by hands while wet, to decrease the volume make it stronger)
  • Cut the foam with knife to give grill the right form;
  • Sanded the grill. then covered with 1 layer of fiberglass with epoxy resine;
  • Sanded, filled the hiles, sanded, smoothened...

Nov'02. Continued the work with the interior/ dumping the noise
  • Continued the work on the door panel (passenger side);
  • Finished the work on the door (same side) - dumping the noise, covering the holes, putting the wires, installing the electric lock;
  • Unmounted the second rear wall panel (driver side);
  • Started dumping the noise/vibration behind the panel;

23-30-Oct. Continued the work with the interior/ sound system
  • Bought the 6.5" 2-component front speakers
  • Made wooden spacer for mounting the speakers in the door
  • Bought the electric lock set (36 Euro)
  • Completed the work with the right rear panel and the space behind it (decoration, and protection against noise/vibration)

12-22-Oct. Continued the work with the interior/ dumping the noise
  • Sticked the poly-urethan plate at the inner surface of the door (over the layer of felt);
  • Sticked one layer of felt behind the rear side panel (below the rear side window).
  • Sitcked poly-urethan mat over the felt
  • Sticked the felt and poly-urethan at the inner surface of the panel
  • Decorated the panel with leather (imitation) and with the carpet

07-10-Oct. Continued the work with the interior
  • Replaced the lamps in the cockpit panel buttons, with the blue LEDs
  • Sticked the felt and pieces of poly-urethan at the inner part of the right door panel.
  • Made a few adjustments of the floor carpet - the fitting is not yet completed.

05-06-Oct. Continued the work with the interior
  • Sticked two layers of the felt under the rear seat;
  • Bought a couple of soft poly-urethan mats (not 100% sure that's the correct term) in the touristic equpment shop - 11 Euro;
  • Put the soft poly-urethan plates (cut from the mat) on the floor under the carpet;
  • Started to fit the carpet - the outline is done, but I still need to complete a few places, particularly corners (to make the cuts and then stick the places to give the flat carpet a volume).

01-02-Oct. Started the work with the interior
  • Unmounted the seats
  • Removed the old carpet (ugly, damaged, and the color doesn't correspond the new seats)
  • Purchased the new carpet (30 Euro)

27-Sep. Finally I've found the seats that I like. Bought for 140 Euro. That's the biggest purchase since I've bought the car.

15-20-Sep. Started the work to dump the noise
  • Bought synthetic felt (10 Euro)
  • At first have started with one door. Enchanced the loosy metal plate (glued 3 mm aluminium strip), and glued one layer of thin synthetic felt at the inner surface of the door.

05-Sep. Purchased some parts (75 Euro)
  • Have purchased used spoiler (original Renault, rubber)
  • Have purchased openable tanned rear windows.

30-Aug. Spent some money again :)
  • Bought and mounted used steering wheel (not quite sure, I think it's one of Renault 5 GT models)
  • Bought used bonnet (capot) - need to paint it, but it doesn't have any bumps unlike my original bonnet. So instead of reparing the original I decided to replace it.
  • Spent 60 Euro for both.

16-Jul to 22-Aug-02. Some minor work, and vacation break :)
  • Doing some little repairs of the body, smoothing the previous ones
  • Finalizing the re-design of the dashboard panel. Changed the lighting to the blue color (with blue LEDs), added termometer
  • Looked around for used seats, though not yet successfully
  • Replaced the broken light unit in the cabin (3 Euro).

15-Jul-02. *** I have passed the technical control today! ***

  • Finalizing, fine tuning, giving final touch and updating the lighting
  • Click here to see the old and the modified dasboard!

10-11-Jun-02. Dashboard:

  • Unmounted the dashboard in order to mount tachometer and to modify the lighting
  • Created some pieces for the modified dashboard

08-09-Jun-02. Some minor work:

  • Has added carburetor cleaner to the gas, and driven about 80 km around
  • Continued to smooth the body above the rear right wheel (using mastic and sandpaper)

07-Jun-02. Tuned the carburetor and the ignition:

  • Tuned the carburetor
  • Tuned the phase of the ignition
  • These actions resulted much more stable work of the engine, and the spark plugs aren't black anymore.
  • The motor is pulling the car quite well despite it's small :)

05-Jun-02. Installed electronic ignition:

  • Purchased and installed electronic ignition (15 Eur) that is a simple add-on to the standard electro-mechanic system, i.e. I don't need to replace any part of the existing system, but just break the circuit and connect the electronic one.
    Now it's much easier to start the engine, and it works more stable.

01-04-Jun-02. Various items:

  • Continued to work on the body (filling and sandpapering the bumps) near the rear right weel.
  • Painted bottom side parts of the body with bitum anticorrosion paint.

11-17-May-02. I was in business trip so can't work on the car.

03-05-May-02. I wanted to complete the work on the brakes, but it was raining whole weekend... so I have done just a little work indoors

  • Just repaired the shelf from the trunk (epoxy resine and fiber glass)

28-29-Apr-02. Worked on the brakes
  • Mounted the new main braking cylinder
  • Checked the brake servo (vacuum braking enchancer): I am happy that it's working fine.
  • The next step will be to mount back the braking cylinder on one of the rear wheels, and then to put the new brake fluid to the system.

24-27-Apr-02. Worked on the brakes
  • Unassambled the rear wheels and checked the brakes, one is OK and one is suspicuios
  • Using the opportunity that braking drums are taken off, I have cleaned them from the rust and painted with protective paint.
  • Unassambled suspicious brakes, unmounted braking cylinder, disassembled it and cleaned.

  • I have found and cleaned up a few new rusty spots
  • I was finishing up the rear bumper with sandpaper and primer. Yet to be completed.

19-Apr-02. It is one month since I have bought the car
  • It's too early to make any summary, because there is still a lot of work in progress and not that much is completed. Most of the things is easier to be done in parallel - something here, a little bit there...

11-17-Apr-02. The weather is cold and rainy, so there is very little progress
  • I have repaired minor damages of the radiator grill that I have bought some time ago to replace the broken original one.

  • Cleaned the silencer from the rust.

25-Mar-02. Purchased additional materials&parts:
  • front break pads
  • anticorrosion spray
